FREE FIVE-MINUTE LEADERSHIP ROUTINE
A weekly reflection routine for busy school principals.
School leadership moves quickly. Without a brief review, even valuable work can disappear into the next week's urgent tasks. This five-minute routine gives principals and assistant principals a way to identify an improvement, recognize an unresolved pattern, and select one realistic next action.
The five-minute weekly principal reflection
- Minute 1: Name one concrete win.
What became clearer, calmer, more consistent, or more effective this week? Name the change rather than saying the week went well.
- Minute 2: Look for evidence.
What did you observe, hear, or review that supports your interpretation? Separate a positive feeling from evidence that a change occurred.
- Minute 3: Find a repeating pattern.
What did you address more than once? Consider whether the issue comes from a missing expectation, a weak process, incomplete information, or a capacity need.
- Minute 4: Choose one responsible move.
Identify a conversation, clarification, observation, or experiment that could help next week. Keep the step small enough to complete.
- Minute 5: Schedule an evidence check.
When and where will you look for change? Decide what would count as useful evidence, including results that might show your first move did not work.
Worked example: inconsistent classroom routines
Win: Three teams agreed on an entry routine.
Evidence: During walkthroughs, the routine was clear in two rooms but not in the third.
Pattern: Instructions are communicated differently across classes.
Next move: Ask the team to describe the first two minutes of class using one shared example.
Next check: Revisit the rooms the following week and document whether students can begin without extra prompting.
How to keep the routine sustainable
Use the same five questions each week. Keep responses brief. If you miss a week, resume without trying to recreate everything you did. The value comes from noticing shifts over time, not completing a perfect record.
Bring the reflection into daily school leadership.
For leaders who want guided prompts between weekly reviews, the 12 principal reflection prompts offer specific questions. Impacting Your School adds 365 daily leadership focuses, 52 weekly check-ins, 12 thirty-day reviews, and five annual reviews in an undated hardcover. Read an authentic focus or explore the journal.
